Wondering, Outside the Lines

Looking for a way to charge Davionn’s creative center and keep him entertained while I worked diligently to finish my morning chores, I handed him a small pack of markers and some Disney Pixar and Cars pictures to color. Within minutes, I could hear a variety of enthusiastic blasts coming from across the room. Sound effects often arise from just about any game the boys play, so I didn’t pay them much attention. I just smiled, amused by his eager imagination, and hustled around the kitchen.

Finally, as I finished wiping up the last of the sticky syrup fingerprints from breakfast, I looked in on Davi… to find his hands colored entirely red! Davionn knows he’s not supposed to color on himself, so I was curious what would instigate the creative and chaotic act. I calmly asked what happened, and as a matter of fact, he met my inquiry equally nonchalantly.

He stated, with the most determined conviction, that while coloring his pictures, “Iron Man’s suit just started to come on me.”

I couldn’t help but laugh out loud and agree that sometimes these things happen, but I did remind him as we suds-ed up his hands that it was better to keep the markers on the paper. I know that the natural impulse of most parents would arguably be to punish an act that appears like defiance. Still, I found it hard in this particular incident to interfere with Marvel fate.

If Davi is chosen, who am I to stand in the way of justice?

More accurately, what happens if outside the lines is Iron Man confidence and adventures? I’m not ready for them/us to miss that.
